Steps to promote fresh water fish farming discussed

Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda said more investments will be made to promote fresh water fish farming in collaboration with investors interested in starting fresh water fish farms in ponds and tanks. This follows a meeting on 22 April at the Fisheries Ministry with representatives from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Devananda said many steps had been taken to promote fish consumption among the local community.

Devananda also said as a result of the global increase in fuel prices, steps have been taken to promote fish farms in tanks and ponds to harvest fish at low cost. Measures have also been taken to enlist medium scale investors in the project, as well as to manufacture boats and fishing nets in collaboration with Cey-Nor.

He said steps are being taken to provide technology to bring harvested fish to the shore without the fish perishing.

Devananda added that he urged the delegation to assist the Government of Norway to develop the fisheries industry in Sri Lanka.
