400m Hurdles National Champion passes away


Sri Lanka women’s 400m hurdles champion Kaushalya Madhushani has passed away yesterday, a day after she won the award for best female hurdler at the 100th National Athletics Championship

Police suspect the 26-year-old committed suicide in her house in Dummalasuriya and are conducting further investigations.

Kaushalya won the Glucolin Challenge Trophy for best hurdler on Saturday (23) at the 100th National Athletics Championship 2022 at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium – Diyagama. She won the 400m hurdles women’s final with a seasonal best of 58.73 seconds on April 09, which was day 02 of the championship before the final day was postponed to 23rd due to heavy showers on 10th. On 23rd She competed in the 400m finals where she finished fourth and also participated at the awards ceremony.

Kaushalya, an old girl of Kuliyapitiya Central College, was a member of Sri Lanka’s Gold medal winning 4x400m relay team at the 2019 South Asian Games in Kathmandu, while also securing a Silver medal in the 400m hurdles. Earlier, she won a Silver medal at the Asian Junior Championship in 2014 and Bronze at the 2016 South Asian Games. She just returned to her best after a long lay-off from injury following the South Asian Games 2019.
