A fighting innings from Ravindu Fernando helped Tamil Union post a modest 201-7 against Sebastianites at stumps on day one of the SLC Major Club Emerging 3-Day Tournament 2022 final which commenced on Friday (22) at the SSC Grounds in Colombo.
After being put into bat first, Tamil Union lost the plot from the get go and lost their top order in quick succession to put them under pressure.
However, when the chips were down Tamil Union’s explosive middle-order batter Ravindu Fernando led the fightback for his club with two valuable partnerships worth 42 and 62 runs for the 5th wicket (with Santhush Gunathilake) and for the 7th wicket (with Kavindu Pathiratne) respectively.
Fernando remained unbeaten on 63 when rain interrupted play just before tea. The persistent rain forced umpires to call an early end to proceedings for the day as both teams shared the honours.
Tharindu Ratnayake was the pick of the bowlers claiming three wickets, while Sandun Fernando and Manelker de Silva snared two wickets each.
Tamil Union: 201-7 (Ravindu Fernando 63*, Santhush Gunathilake 27, Tharindu Ratnayake 3/91, Sandun Fernando 2/20, Manelker de Silva 2/36)
