COVID-19 or the Coronavirus is a rapidly spreading disease that is affecting millions of people around the globe. The Coronavirus was first detected in Wuhan, China back in December 2019. It is rumoured to have started by people eating bats and snakes but there is not evidence to back these facts up. Some even say that it was a lab experiment that went wrong. COVID-19 was first brought to Sri Lanka by a tourist in January 2020. She recovered few weeks later but many Sri Lankans have been affected since.

On 11 December 2020, the first vaccine for COVID was made by a German – Turkish couple. Then many other companies like Sinopharm, Moderna, Jhonson & Jhonson made more type of vaccines. The COVID-19 vaccine is basically a smaller version of the actual virus, this trains the immune system to get ready for the real fight.

Corona can also be used as an advantage for us. For  example, gardening. As all the grocery shops are closed we could grow new things. We could also improve our talents that we never knew we had. There are also many variants to COVID like Alpha, Beta, Delta, Omicron and the newest, Deltacron.

When COVID-19 was spreading rapidly in 2021, many animals got affected as well. A lion at the Dehiwela Zoo was also affected and has sadly passed away. A cat in Belgium was also affected but recovered.  Sanitisers are also very famous now as they destroy 99 per cent of all germs and viruses but I think that 20 seconds of washing hands with soap and water is much better as sanitisers have chemicals that harm skin.

So let us wash our hands, maintain social distancing and end COVID together.
