The much-awaited sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 released recently. The adventure driven science-fiction comedy, adapted from the popular Sega video game franchise, features a vibrant and entertaining story, which sees Sonic make new friends and grow as an individual, while once again dealing with an old enemy.
The easily enjoyable film with the tagline ‘welcome to the next level,’ features a cast of experienced stars, with Ben Schwartz, reprising his voice cast role as the title character Sonic the Hedgehog, working alongside the live-action cast, that also features several lead stars reprising their roles.With James Marsden returning as Tom Wachowski, Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, Adam Pally as Wade Whipple, and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. The film also introduces two prominent new characters to the storyline, with Miles ‘Tails’ Prower, voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Knuckles the Echidna, voiced by Idris Elba.
Filmed in Vancouver and Hawaii, the story continues where its predecessor left off, with Sonic comfortably settled in with his new family in Green Hills. The plot starts to take shape when, Sonic is shown wanting to be seen as a true hero and feeling that he needs to prove to himself and those around him that he has what it takes. Meanwhile,
Dr. Robotnik, who was banished through a portal into a mushroom planet (at the end of the previous film), returns, but this time he has a partner, Knuckles. And this is when things take a sudden turn in Sonic’s life, with him suddenly in danger, and to make things even worse, Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles are trying to find the mystical Master Emerald that could make whoever gets their hands on it, so powerful that it could put civilisations in complete danger.
The story is fun to watch as Sonic and a new sidekick from another planet, Tails, embark on an adventure across the globe, that is fun to watch, filled with challenges, traps, and evendance battles, on their way, as they focus on what’s important, while trying to do the right thing, no matter what the cost.
The 122-minute film by director Jeff Fowler, was made together with producers Toby Ascher, Hitoshi Okuno, Neal H. Mortz, and Toru Nakahara, working in collaboration with production companies Sega Sammy Group, Blur Studio, Original Film, and Marza Animation Planet. Made with a budget of US$ 90 million, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 raked in just over 56 million at the worldwide box-office, supported by moderate to positive ratings, with 68 per cent featured on Rotten Tomatoes and 7/10 on IMDb. The ratings were backed by mixed critic, with many appreciating the film’s straightforward humour, action, and overall performance, while others disapproved of its pacing and lengthy runtime.
For those who want more from the series, a third film is already in development, while a special spin-off series with Knuckles at its centre is also underway. Since the release of the first film, the series franchise has seen increased demand, and it looks like fans will have more to look forward to in the years ahead.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is easily enjoyable by viewers of all ages, while those who grew up playing the popular games, are sure to have a bit of childhood nostalgia. And thoughthe new sequel is far from perfect, for fans of Sonic the Hedgehog, it will certainly still bea treat to watch.
