IGP C.D. Wickramaratne, together with several other officers, appeared before the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) this morning (22) for questioning regarding the Police shooting that took place at the Rambukkan protests on Tuesday.
Issuing a statement, HRCSL assured that a probe is being conducted so as to identify those responsible for giving orders to the officers in-site to open fire at the protesters, and reasons as to why live ammunition was fired.
A five-member team comprising of HRCSL officials, a legal officer and a human rights official was deployed to Rambukkana, to visit those who participated in the protests, Police personnel and journalists who were on-site, the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) and staff of the Kegalle Hospital.
Subsequently, HRCSL is due to make recommendations to the Government pertaining to the incident.
