Govt trying to hold on to power using violence – Tilvin

The Government came to power by creating a blood bath and now they are eager to stay on by creating another blood bath in their hunger for power, General Secretary of the Jathika Jana Balawegaya (JJB) Tilvin Silva alleged.

Addressing the media yesterday (20) at the JVP Headquarters, he said the JJB condemns the gruesome acts of the Government, referring to the Rambukkana incident.

He lamented that the protesters who were present at the scene were innocent people who came to the streets to express their frustration against the Government.

He said, by murdering and injuring innocent people is how the Government responded to their call for help.

Now the Government is trying to cover their tracks by pointing fingers at other parties, he added.

“It is questionable as to what extremes the Police can go to attack people if they insist the force they used yesterday was a minimum,” he said.

He alleged the heated situations that erupted between Police and the public in Mirihana and Rambukkana were scripted by the Government.

Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, calling President Gotabaya Rajapaksa a heartless man said he shouldn’t be in office. She requested the Police to only exercise powers vested in them and not to abuse their power.

Meanwhile, JJB lawyers also addressed the Media regarding the incident yesterday.

“The IGP and the Minister of Public Security should resign as this incident could be considered murder and contravenes the provisions of the Constitution, Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code,” Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala said.

He said the method by which the Police handled the situation was disgraceful.
