Former Minister of Public Security, Rear Admiral (retired) Sarath Weerasekara yesterday (19) told Parliament that he did not use the luxury vehicle that was allegedly used by the ring leader of Easter Sunday suicide bombers, Zaharan Hashim, which was later used by the STF after it was confiscated by the State.
Weerasekara made this clarification in response to a question made by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).
The SJB, referring to a tweet of a BBC Correspondent in Sri Lanka that reports claim that Zaharan Hashim’s Toyota Land Cruiser V8 is currently being used by Weerasekara, brought up the journalist’s query in Parliament on whether a court production could be used by a politician.
Weerasekara said,“I was informed about this particular tweet in the morning. I inquired from the Ministry Secretary in this regard after that. The Ministry Secretary informed me that the vehicle had been handed over as State property to the Sri Lanka Police, and the Police had given it to the STF later. The Ministry Secretary confirmed that the vehicle was not given for my use. It was included among the service vehicles provided to the Police STF. I never used this particular vehicle.”
