The Meteorology Department, yesterday (19) said showers or thundershowers can be expected in several parts of the country today (20).

Meteorologist Srimal Herath said, showers or thundershowers could occur at times in the Western Province as well as Galle and Matara districts.

He also cautioned the public of possible strong winds and lightning strikes, advising precautionary measures to minimise damage.

Meanwhile, Herath said, showers or thundershowers can be expected in several places in the deep and shallow sea off the coast from Puttalam extending to Hambantota via Colombo, Galle, and Matara in the evening or night, while expecting showers or thundershowers in other coastal areas.

He said, wind speed is expected to be from 20 to 30 kilometres per hour (kmph) in the sea surrounding the island from Westerly direction and expected to increase from 35 to 45 kmph at times in the shallow sea off the coast from Galle extending to Hambantota via Matara and in the deep sea off the coast from Puttalam extending to Galle via Colombo and Kalutara.

The sea off the coast from Galle extending to Hambantota via Matara and from Puttalam extending to Galle via Puttalam would remain fairly rough at times. Other coastal areas would remain slightly moderate. Temporary strong, gusty winds and turbulent sea can be expected during the thundershowers, Herath added.
