Defending champs St. Joseph’s out to retain title


Defending champion St. Joseph’s College Colombo will meet Richmond College Galle in the final of the Under-19 Division One Tier ‘A Inter Schools Cricket Tournament today (20) at Police Park Colombo.

St. Joseph’s advanced to the quarter-final as unbeaten group champions with 5 wins. They beat St. Thomas’ Matara, S. Thomas’ Mt. Lavinia, St. Benedict’s Kotahena, St. Anthony’s Katugastota and St. Sebastian’s Moratuwa in the first round. They beat Wesley College Colombo in the quarter-final and De Mazenod College Kandana in the semi-final.

Richmond advanced to the quarter-final as runner-up of their group with 3 wins from 4 matches. They beat St. Anne’s Kurunegala, Wesley Colombo and D.S. Senanayake Colombo and lost to Nalanda Colombo in the first round, while their match against Royal was not played. Richmond beat St. Anthony’s Katugastota in the quarter-final and Mahanama Colombo in the semi-final.

Youth cap Shevon Daniel leads St. Joseph’s. Former youth skipper Dunith Wellalage and youth cap Sadeesh Jayawardene are also in the side. 

Bhanuka Manohara leads Richmond, while Kalpa Nethsara will assist him as deputy skipper. They have youth cap Malsha Tharupathi in their side.
