The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has decided to submit the No-Confidence Motion against the Government to the Speaker within this week, with the signatures of a sufficient number of Members.
Internal sources revealed, the said decision was taken during an emergency meeting of the SJB Parliamentary Group which took place on 16 April, via ZOOM.
Sources admitted that further discussions were held on the possibility of handing over the no-confidence motion to the Speaker within the next parliamentary week with the signatures of a sufficient number of members and to reverse the 20th Amendment and establish the 19th Amendment.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, addressing a public gathering at Akkaraipattu on 15 April said all necessary steps would be taken to abolish the executive presidency, as well as to defeat the Government and the President through a no-confidence motion and an impeachment. He also noted that he would continue to reverse the 20th Amendment and establish the 19th Amendment.
Meanwhile, Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) Leader Jeewan Thondaman, yesterday (17) tweeted that they have decide to temporarily abstain from supporting the Opposition’s decision.
“The reasoning behind the decision was that we have not been intimated by the Opposition as to what their road map is and if in case no party/coalition can show simple majority then the question arises on how to proceed,” he added.
He further added that the CWC is not the only party as there are other parties that share the similar view and are seeking answers from the Opposition.
