The Meteorology Department predicted yesterday (17) that showers or thundershowers could occur in several parts of the country today (18).
While commenting on the current state of the atmosphere, showers or thundershowers could be expected in the Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Central, Northern Central, and Eastern provinces during the evening or night.
Showers are also expected along the coasts of the Western and North Western provinces, as well as the Galle and Matara districts.
Possible heavy winds and lightning strikes were also expected. The Met Dept cautions to take precautionary measures to minimise damage caused by temporary localized heavy winds and lightning strikes.
Showers or thundershowers could occur at several places in the deep and shallow seas off the coast from Galle extending to Kankesanthurai via Colombo, Puttalam and Mannar.
Wind velocity is expected to be from 20 to 30 kilometres per hour (kmph) from South Westerly direction. Wind velocity is expected to increase from 35 to 45 kmph at times in the seas off the coast from Puttalam extending to Kankesanrhurai via Mannar and would remain fairly turbulent at times. Other seas surrounding the island would remain fairly moderate. Temporary strong gusty winds and severely turbulent seas can be expected during the thundershowers.
