Nawalapitiya gas dealer arrested

A gas dealer was arrested on 15 April for having hidden 230 cylinders of gas, in a house, to be sold at a higher price, the OIC of Ginigathhena Police said.

During the raid, Police found 177 12.5 litre cylinders of gas, 28 5 kg cylinders and 25 2.3 kg cylinders.

An official of the Nuwara Eliya Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said it has been revealed that the stock of gas issued to the Nawalapitiya Litro Gas dealer on the Nawalapitiya-Gampola main road was hidden in the dealer’s house and was about to be sold at a higher price.

In addition three empty gas cylinders were also found. Saranga Wijesinghe, Senior Manager of the Litro Gas Company for the Central, Uva, Sabaragamuwa, Uva Provinces said an investigation has been launched against the suspect for causing and artificial shortage of Litro gas in the Nawalapitiya area and for not delivering gas to dealers.

OIC of the Ginigathhena Police further said action will be taken in connection with gas cylinders seized by Police and against the suspect once the latter is brought before the Hatton Magistrate.
