Hansadie Aradhya Akuratiya of Ferguson High School, Ratnapura won the Sri Lanka National Youth Chess Championships 2022 Under-10 Girls’ event scoring 6 ½ points out of 7 games and remaining unbeaten throughout, while Haritha Hansana of Rahula College, Matara proved his superiority in the Under-12 Open category by scoring 7 points out of 8 games. Though he tied with Disal Nimsara Weerasekara he won the title with a better tie breaker.
In the Girls’ event, Sasmi Sithumsa (Lyceum International School), Oshini Gunawardena (Wycherley International School Colombo) and R.B. Hasadi Sethumsa (Sujatha Vidyalaya) scored
6 points out of 7 games, but Sasmi had the better tie breaking points to win second place while Oshini won third place.
Dishal Nimsara Weerasekara (Sri Chandananda Buddhist College Kandy) won second place, while B. Janukshan (Jaffna Hindu College) won third place with better breaking points over Pamok Samaranayake (Rahula College Matara). Overnight leader Thisarindu Induwara came in fourth.
The championships was held as part of the Golden Jubilee year of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (1972 – 2022) and conducted in 12 age categories – under-8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 years Open and Girls. Only the Under-12 Open and Under-10 Girls’ categories were conducted on 9, 10 and 12 April as International Rated Events at Shashthrananda Vidyalaya, Dehiwala. The other 10 events will be held in the coming weekends.
The top three players will be included in the National Youth Chess Teams to represent the country at Asian/ World Youth events.
