Head of the Epidemiology Unit Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said the dengue virus has begun to spread rapidly in the Western Province.

He stated that during the first 10 days of this month alone, 1,492 dengue patients had been detected in the Western Province.

Dr. Samaraweera explained that so far a total of 15,196 dengue patients had been reported during the first four months of this year.

He added that however the number of deaths from the virus had declined significantly due to the efforts of the doctors and hospital staff.

The head of the Epidemiology Unit also advised the public to seek medical treatment if they continue to have fever for more than 24 hours.
