Police fire tear gas at Kandy protesters

Tear gas and water cannons were fired by the Police in an attempt to disperse protesters gathered near the University of Peradeniya a short while ago (03).

Earlier today, students gathered near the university premises in Kandy to protest against the current economic crisis.

They were, however, obstructed by the Police while attempting to march towards the Kandy town, and were later fired at with tear gas and water canons.

Several groups of protesters took to the streets today, despite there being an islandwide curfew, to voice their frustrations against the Government.

A 36-hour islandwide curfew was imposed from 06:00 pm yesterday (02), till 06:00 am tomorrow (04).
