The 36-hour curfew imposed from 06:00 pm today (02) is unlikely to prevent people from protesting tomorrow (03), Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) National Organiser, Tissa Attanayake said.
Speaking to Ceylon Today, Attanayke regarded the move as a ‘foolish action taken by the Government’, explaining that this would only add the public’s frustration.
“People are already angry. By protesting they are able to lash out their anger in some form, but denying them of their right to do so only further fuels their anger”, he said in this regard.
Moreover, Attanayake suggested that as opposed to imposing such a curfew, the Government should have requested the public to refrain from inciting any violence during the protest, and to not damage public or private properties.
“They should not have stopped the publlic. Instead they should have made certain requests”, he said.
An islandwide curfew was imposed from 06:00 pm this evening (02) till 06:00 am on Monday (04).
The move comes ahead of the public protests that were scheduled to take place tomorrow (03), against the ongoing economic crisis.
