St. Benedict’s College and Wesley College will clash for the ‘Luke Shield’ in their annual Limited Overs Cricket one day encounter on Saturday (2) at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium (P. Sara Oval).
5th year coloursman Sahil Dias leads Wesley, while 3rd year coloursman Anudith Wickramasinghe will assist him as deputy skipper.
5th year coloursman Pasan Suwahas leads St. Benedict’s, while 4th year coloursman Ashen de Zoysa will assist him as deputy skipper.
The teams first met on a cricket pitch back in 1896 and the encounter celebrates this 126 year legacy. The two-day encounter for the ‘Cartman Cup’ was played last weekend at Campbell Park. Both matches are organized and hosted by the Bens-Wesley Joint Committee, along with the patronage of both schools.
Wicket keeper/batter Pasan Suwahas, the St. Benedict’s skipper, scored 150 runs against S. Thomas’ College in their 50 over tournament encounter, which the Benedictines won in Kotahena. In the same tournament the Benedictines also had the better of St. Sebastian’s College Moratuwa, and prior to that beat St. Anne’s College Kurunegala in their traditional two-day encounter.
Other seniors in the side are batting all rounder and 4th year coloursman Ashen de Zoysa, batter and 3rd year coloursman Yohan Soyza, bowling all rounder Sachin Senanayake and fast bowler Aneesha Madumalka. Left arm leg break bowler Chamath Chaturiya and young batting prodigy Sharujan Shanmuganathan are the players to watch out for.
All rounder Sahil Dias, the Wesley skipper, already has a century under his name against S. Thomas’ College.
Deputy skipper Anudith Wickramasinghe, Semila Liyanage, Tilshan Senanayake and Rakith Fernando are the 4th year coloursmen of the side. Wesley enjoyed early success this year when they beat S. Thomas’ College after 50 years.
