The Meteorology Department yesterday (31) warned that showers or thundershowers can be expected at several places in most parts of the country today (1) except for the Northern Province.

Showers or thundershowers can be expected in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, North Western, Southern, North Central, Western and Eastern Provinces after 2:00 p.m. today or in the night.

It further predicted that fairly heavy showers above 75 mm can be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern Provinces.

Public should be cautious of possible temporary heavy winds and lightning strikes and take adequate precautionary measures to minimise damages.

Showers or thundershowers could occur in the deep and shallow seas off the coast from Pottuvil extending to Colombo via Hambantota, Matara, Galle, Kalutara and Moratuwa.

Wind velocity is expected to be from 20 to 30 kmph in the seas surrounding the island. Wind velocity is expected to be from South-Westerly direction in the seas off the coast from Kankesanturai extending to Hambantota via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Matara and from South-Easterly direction in other seas surrounding the island.

Temporary strong gusty winds and very turbulent seas can be expected during thundershowers, the Department said.
