Protesters won’t be charged under PTA, nearly Rs.40M damages incurred

Those who were arrested over their involvement in last night’s protest will be charged under the Penal Code and the Public Properties Act, Senior Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

A total of 54 persons, including a woman, have been arrested thus far.

Speaking at a press conference this morning (01) Rohana noted that protesters will not be charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

Property damages incurred during last night’s tensions were amounted to nearly Rs.39 million, while 24 police personnel including 18 officers of the Police Special Task Force (STF) sustained injuries.

Investigations into the incident are being carried out by the Colombo Crimes Division, Criminal Investigation Department and Western (North) Crimes Division, he said, adding that probes are underway into claims that journalists were attacked by the military during the protest.

“Journalists cannot be stopped from reporting such incidents”, he said in this regard.
