Police have arrested a total of 54 persons, including a woman, who were involved in last night’s (31) protest in Mirihana, Police Spokesman S.S.P Nihal Thalduwa said.
The Spokesman said protesters had set ablaze several vehicles belonging to security forces, including an army bus, a police bus, two motorcycles, a jeep and a three-wheeler.
While 37 persons were injured and admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, five police officers including an Assistant Superintendent (ASP), fourteen Special Task Force officers, three journalists and civilians were amongst those injured.
Police used minimal force to control the crowd, including firing tear gas and water cannons, Thalduwa said.
Police investigations are currently underway to investigate the parties whose intervention had turned the peaceful protest violent. The Spokesman added that further investigations are being carried out by the Western Province Crimes Investigation Division.
