Mask mandate could be waived – Dr. Herath

The Health Ministry could even consider waiving the face mask once at least 80 per cent of the population is fully vaccinated against Covid-19, Deputy Director General Disaster Management and Emergency Response, Dr. Hemantha Herath said.

Dr. Herath when contacted on Wednesday (30) said the public are still lagging behind in taking the third or booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

“With more than half the population still not taking it, the Health Ministry cannot even think of waiving the use of the mask. Till now only 54 per cent of the public have taken the booster dose which is dissatisfactory. Once the first, second and booster doses are taken a person is considered to be fully vaccinated.

“At least 80 per cent of the population should obtain all three Covid shots to waive wearing the face mask. The mask is perhaps the only safety measure against the virus,” he said.
