General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) Joseph Stalin charged on Tuesday (29) that the ‘Suraksha’ insurance scheme that had been put in place for students had been dispensed with by the current Government.
He alleged that since 31 December last year the agreement with regard to the aforesaid insurance scheme had not been renewed.
Hence, Stalin charged that the insurance cover which had encompassed 4.5 million students in the country had automatically expired due to its non-renewal for this year.
The ‘Suraksha’ insurance scheme was initiated during the ‘Yahapalana’ government in collaboration with the Education Ministry and the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation (SLIC) in 2017. It was given to schoolchildren from all walks of life in government, private and international schools and also extends to student priests in Pirivenas.
