Navy seizes spice haul off Kayts Island


The Navy seized dried turmeric, cardamom and herbicide bottles being smuggled into the island during a special operation in the seas off Allappiddi, Kayts Island on 30 March. 

SLNS Kanchadewa of the Northern Naval Command intercepted a suspicious dinghy in the seas off Allappiddi. When the dinghy was brought ashore and inspected, the Navy found 1,828 kg of dried turmeric in 36 sacks, 137 kg of cardamom in 1 kg packs and 134 bottles containing 500 ml and 250 ml of herbicide. The Navy also apprehended a suspect aboard the dinghy.

The suspect has been identified as a 20-year-old resident of Venpuravinagar in Kayts Island. The suspect with the contraband items will be handed over to Jaffna Customs for onward legal action.
