Chief Medical Officer of Health, Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuni said yesterday (29) that spot-checks on the quality and suitability of food and beverages sold athotels and restaurants within Colombo city limits would be carried out from 1 to 14 April.
Dr. Wijayamuni further said 49 Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) would be engaged for this purpose. He said those found selling food and beverages unfit for consumption including items that have past the expiry date would be prosecuted under the Food Act.
Dr. Wijayamuni also advises the public to pay attention to labels on food packages and beverage bottles.
Since adulterated spices was being sold in the market, consumers must check its fragrance, colour etc., before purchasing, Dr. Wijayamuni added.
