CWC elects new leader today

The Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) will elect a new leader today (30) but General Secretary of the Party, State Minister Jeevan Thondaman will not contest, CWC sources said. 

Former Uva Province Minister Senthil Thondaman and Nuwara Eliya Development Committee Chairman, MP M. Rameshwaran, will vie for the Party leader position. 

The position of Party leader had been vacant since 2020 following the demise of Arumugam Thondaman. A new leader will be selected by conducting an internal vote with participation of over 100 members of the CWC.

Meanwhile, Speaking to Ceylon Today, Jeevan Thondaman noted that Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has guaranteed that India will support the university, which is set to be built in the upcountry, in every possible way. 

The CWC has met the Indian External Affairs Minister yesterday (29) and discussed the possibilities of overcoming the current economic crisis within the country. 

Further, the Indian external Affairs Minister said that they will help and fulfil all the needs of the university and also assist in the construction of the new housing scheme which is being built in the upcountry.

Thondaman added that they have also discussed the on-going projects implemented to develop the upcountry and future projects which India is planning to implement to uplift the lives of upcountry people.
