Director General of Organisation for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR) Deepthi Lamahewa has urged that reconciliation committees must be set up covering every Grama Niladhari Division to promote reconciliation amongst communities.

While addressing the media on 25 March, Lamahewa added, it has been intended to set up 14,200 such committees covering every district including the Northern and Eastern provinces.

The said committee will consist of village leaders such as representatives of meditation boards and Grama Niladharis of respective divisions and would be provided with proper training. The role of youth is essential to prevent violence based on ethnicity as well as region.

ONUR is planning to establish this mechanism island wide. It wouldn’t be a programme targeting a particular ethnic group, Lamahewa added.
