More Sathyagraha campaigns to achieve goals – UNP Chair

By Naalir Jamaldeen

UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena yesterday (28) claimed that the sathyagraha organised last Friday (25) was successful as expected and expressed his gratitude to those who extended support.

He said many more sathyagraha campaigns will be held until they achieve their goals.

Addressing the Media in Colombo, Abeywardena said that at this critical juncture citizens must be given correct information about the plight the country was facing.

“UNP Leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe predicted during the General Election 2020 what was going to happen to the country if this Government was elected. But the people rejected us. Now they have realised the mistake and extending support to us,” he added.

“Wickremesinghe predicted in 2020 that the country would fall into such a plight. First of all, we must understand the state we have fallen today. Many countries made use of the assistance of the IMF to resolve the economic crisis in their countries. But we did not go for that option,” Abeywardena said.

He said he read the IMF Report in full and added that there was nothing detrimental to the country except for providing timely and correct guidelines to resolve the economic crisis.

Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Afghanistan, the Maldives, Egypt and Kenya obtained financial assistance from the IMF in 2020. Sri Lanka did not get international assistance to solve the crisis. The rulers didn’t have economic prudence and an imprudent governing system has plunged the country into severe economic crisis and in addition it has isolated itself from international presence. The UNP is the only party which has the power and strength to raise funds and get assistance from the international community, Abeywardena added.
