Former Minister Udaya Gammanpila suggested the Government should halt development activities and prioritise feeding the poor.

He said, quoting an American war expert, Robert Kaplan that the Indian Ocean is the most important ocean of the century, and Sri Lanka, located in the middle of it, was the most important country.

“All these people want to take control of Sri Lanka. When people run out of food, someone gives them food, and they are willing to do anything. The issue of medicine is more pressing. Lentils and green gram are both acceptable alternative commodities. The same goes with bread and potato. But this problem was killing heart and cancer patients,” he said.

He was speaking yesterday (28) at the Minioluwa Vidyawasa Pirivena, Mirigama, when leaders of 11 constituent parties of the Government met the Chief Incumbent of the Ramanna Maha Nikaya, Ven. Makulewe Wimala Mahanayake Thera.

Leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF) Wimal Weerawansa and MP Gevindu Cumaratunga were also present.

Gammanpila also said Sri Lanka is in the heart of Asia which can be a curse at times but can also be a blessing.
