Five people were killed in road accidents in five different locations on 26 March. All accidents reported on that particular day were caused by the vehicle owners’ careless driving or riding.
A motorcyclist was killed in an accident on 26 March in the Hasalaka Police Division.
According to Police, the accident took place when the motorcyclist tried to overtake a tractor that was in front of him.
The tractor was travelling towards Hasalaka on the Maha Nuwara-Mahiyanganaya road when the accident took place.
Police stated that the motorcycle collided with the tractor and the rider, who was seriously injured had died on admission to Mahiyanganaya Hospital.
The deceased was identified as a 60-year-old resident of
6 Mile Oost, Ambagaha Palassa.
Police stated that they arrested the driver of the Tractor and are conducting investigations.
A girl was killed in a road accident when the three-wheeler she was travelling in collided head on with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.
The three-wheeler was travelling from Thanamalwila towards Udawalawe on 26 March when the accident took place.
The girl who was critically injured died on admission to Thanamalwila Hospital.
The deceased was identified as a 14-year-old resident of Uva Kuda-oya, Thanamalwila.
Police stated that the driver of the three-wheeler and the motorcyclist were admitted to Thanamalwila and Hambantota Hospitals.
Thanamalwila Police are conducting investigations.
A motorcycle rider died when his bike veered off the road and rolled over.
Police said the motorcyclist, who was travelling from Avissawella to Ratnapura on 26 March, had lost control of his motorcycle and was grievously injured.
However he died on admission to Avissawella Hospital.
The deceased was identified as a 32-year-old resident of Rathnapura.
Police stated that the accident took place due to the careless and reckless riding of the motorcyclist.
A girl was killed in a vehicle accident on 26 March in Diyatalawa.
Police stated the accident took place when a motorcycle and an ambulance collided head on while travelling to opposite directions.
The motorcyclist and the pillion rider were critically injured and admitted to Diyatalawa Hospital.
However the pillion rider died in Hospital while the motorcyclist was transferred to Badulla Hospital.
The deceased was identified as a 17-year-old resident of Lunuwatta, Uvaparanagama.
The driver of the ambulance was arrested and Diyatalawa Police are conducting further investigations.
A motorcyclist was killed in an accident with a Truck on
26 March in Kathargama.
Police stated the accident took place when the motorcycle bumped into the truck from behind.
Both vehicles were travelling in the same direction.
The motorcyclist, who was seriously injured, died on admission to Kataragama Hospital.
The deceased was identified as a 33-year-old resident of Akmeemana.
Kataragama Police are conducting further investigations.
