The Janatha Estate Development Board (JEDB) had undertaken to settle all due payments of its former estate workers on or before 02 November 2022.

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) received a complaint regarding the nonpayment of EPF/ ETF/ gratuity of approximately 12,000 workers of estates owned by the JEDB, Sri Lanka State Plantation Corporation, and Elkaduwa Plantations Limited in 2013.

The total due payment was around Rs. 1,888 million.

The Ministry of Plantation Industries, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Public Enterprise and Kandy Development, Department of Labour, and Central Bank of Sri Lanka were also respondent parties to this case.

The HRCSL issued the recommendations to all respondent parties regarding the nonpayment of EPF/ ETF/ gratuity in 2019, but the parties failed to implement the recommendations.

Hence the parties were summoned by the HRCSL to the Commission today (23) and inquired about the progress of the recommendations.

During discussions, the Janatha Estate Development Board had undertaken to settle all due payments of former estate workers of the Estates of JEDB on or before 2 November 2022.
