Robert Pattinson stars as Batman

The latest American superhero film, The Batman, stars Robert Pattinson in the lead as Bruce Wayne,who doubles as the title character, Batman. The action-adventure film with the tagline ‘Unmask the truth,’ based on the characters from DC Comics, investigates a series of high-profile murders in Gotham City.

The film also stars Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Colin Farrell as Penguin, Paul Dano as Riddler, and Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, among a cast of equally skilled actors. 

This film comes as a reboot, as part of the popular Batman film franchise, and shows Batman fighting crime in Gotham City, when things suddenly get complicated, as he walks into an active crime scene, where a sadistic killer has left a note for “Batman” with cryptic clues. The storyline unfolds as Batman follows a trail of clues, to try and uncover who the culprit could be.

The plot focuses on creativity thought-out attention to detail, as the story takes viewers on a journey with Batman, as his characters decode the evidence like a detective, to find out the perpetrator’s plan, by working with new allies, the underworld,and the authorities, to find out why the victims are part of the elite circle in the city.

Venturing into a world of corruption that has been plaguing the metropoles, Batman must uncover what is beneath the surface in a city burdened by corruption and abuse of power. The story is intriguing and engaging, as each clue gets Batman closer and closer to solving the case.

The 176-minute film by director Matt Reeves, was produced together with Dylan Clark, working in collaboration with production companies DC Films, Dylan Clark Productions, and 6th & Idaho, with a budget of US$185 million to US$200 million. The film’s release was delayed twice due to the pandemic but is now making its way to cinemas around the world, easily raking in over 315 million at the worldwide box-office andbecoming the third highest grossing film of the year. The film marks the beginning of the Batman shared universe, which includes two sequels and two spin-off television series, which are currently in development.

The Batman has received mostly positive critic, supported by equally impressive ratings, with 85% featured on Rotten Tomatoes, 72 per cent on Metacritic and 8.5/10 on IMDb, backed by praise for the film’s cinematography, visual style, action sequence, and overall direction. One of the few things that received criticism was the film’s lengthy run time.

Robert Pattinson as Batman has been well-received, both by his fans and thosewho appreciate Batman as a character. Given that the role has been played by several skilled and experienced actors in the past, there were high expectations from fans of the franchise that needed to be met, and Pattinson managed to easily deliver a natural performance that fans appreciated. 

This fresh new version maintains  the core concepts and dark theme. This is a film that many who are fans of the series will appreciate, while others might just find the film to be a bit too long for a story that is somewhat predictable.
