A senior Police officer said they were investigating whether a retired Muslim Superintendent of Police has been involved in releasing the nine suspects arrested at the Wellampitiya copper factory.
Police said that the day following the incident those nine suspects were arrested and produced in Court and remanded till 6 May.
However, the Court had ordered the release of those nine suspects on bail at the next hearing.
The source added that they will investigate whether a retired Senior SP had pressured the Wellampitiya OIC in connection with the case.
Investigations will be conducted after obtaining telephone data record of the Wellampitiya OIC, a source said.
He said the statements obtained from the suspects arrested at the copper factory are also weak and statements had been recorded from several Police officers, including the Police constable, who was present in Court on that day.
Investigations are being conducted by a team led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Kingsley Gunasekara on the instructions and supervision of the DIG, Police Special Investigations Division, Mewan de Silva.
