General Secretary of the SLFP and Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara yesterday (9) said that there is a possibility of President Maithripala Sirisena seeking the Supreme Court’s (SC) opinion once again to determine what the starting and the ending dates of his Presidential term are.
Addressing a media briefing at the SLFP headquarters, Jayasekara said that the previous Supreme Court ruling on the term of the President did not mention the starting and ending dates of the Presidential term.
The Supreme Court on 15 January 2018 ruled that President Sirisena’s term in office is limited to five years from January 2015. Accordingly, his term would now ends in January 2020 and the next Presidential Election would have to be announced in November 2019.
Speaking further, Jayasekara said that a law passed by the Parliament becomes active when the Speaker signs that Bill.
“Speaker Karu Jayasuriya put his signature to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution Bill on 28 June 2015. Because of that, there is a discussion within and outside the SLFP that the 19th Amendment came into force from 28 June 2015. Therefore, the President might seek the Supreme Court’s opinion regarding the starting and the ending dates of his term in office once again. He would do that most probably after 22 April,” he said.
