SLFP stalwarts Dayasiri Jayasekara and Nimal Siripala De Silva stressed that the lack of discipline among Party Members has caused its near destruction and henceforth improving discipline of Party Members would be prioritized.
They expressed these views while addressing a Media briefing after Jayasekara officially assumed duties as the Party’s General Secretary at the Party headquarters today (10).
“To save the Party, we can’t be extremists, because Sri Lankans' worked on behalf of the SLFP irrespective of their race/ethnicity and religion,” Jayasekara alleged.
He added that the SLFP should practice political principles which carry neither extremist nor capitalist ideas.
He further claimed that to regain the fame which the SLFP lost, the SLFP is planning to elect new chief organizers and new District Organisers at grassroot level to regain the confidence of SLFP supporters who left the Party or were disillusioned with it.
Jayasekera also said that they were starting a Party restructuring programme to strengthen the SLFP agenda and to empower the SLFP hierarchy starting from the rural areas.
Meanwhile, explaining the current situation of the SLFP, MP De Silva commented that the Party is facing tough times because of Party Members who are acting according to their personal agendas rather than working with the Party agenda. He added that this would only benefit SLFP’s political enemies.
Jayasekera added that there were internal conflicts within the Party due to Party Members holding different political views.
De Silva claimed that most political parties have been shattered because they try to enforce their personal agendas rather than following a common agenda.
Jayasekera added that it is the politicians’ responsibility to bring public opinion on the correct track.
