A shift towards increased rice cultivation due to good rains has impacted ‘other field crops’ (OFCs), Assistant Director - Agriculture (Agricultural Economics), N.L. Sudeera said today (19).
Consequently, this Maha season, currently being harvested, is expected to yield a bumper harvest of three million metric tons (mts) of paddy, sufficient to meet the country’s rice requirements for nine months, he said. Previously, rice cultivation was impacted by a prolonged drought, he said.
Subsequently, this Maha’s green chili target vis-à-vis the previous Maha, however, is expected to fall by 27 per cent to 31,691 mts, soya beans by 80 per cent to 1,314 mts, cowpea by 59 per cent to 4,622 mts and green gram by 51 per cent to 4,338 mts, he said.
When paddy cultivation increases, OFCs fall, Sudeera said.
He, however, said that potato cultivation was impacted due to low import taxes. As a result, this Maha’s potato harvest is expected to decline by 32 per cent to 27,920 mts compared to last year’s harvest, he said.
Meanwhile, the fall armyworm (FAW) is expected to impact the maize harvest by 13 per cent to 237,721 mts. Nonetheless, in volume terms, the FAW is targeted to eat up this Maha harvest by 71,684 mts; equivalent to 26 per cent of last year’s Maha harvest.
However, upcountry vegetables such as beans are envisaged to yield a good Maha harvest due to upcountry farmers turning to cultivating crops other than potatoes because of a better price fetched in the market currently, he said.
The Maha bean harvest this year is envisaged to be 125 per cent more than last year’s envisaged target, with a harvest of 4,184 mts targeted this year. This is because beans are fetching a good price currently, compared to the price it fetched the same time last year, Sudeera said.
