Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, today (13), said in Parliament that the hit and run accident, where Borella Traffic Officer-In-Charge, Inspector of Police Ananda Sagara Sarathchandra was killed, is a black mark on the entire country.
Wickremesinghe made this remark when UPFA Parliamentarian Mahindananda Aluthgamage alleged that the Prime Minister had instructed the Police to take into custody his son, who travelled in the second vehicle, in connection with the accident.
Aluthgamage said that it was not fair to arrest those who travelled in the second vehicle in connection with the accident.
“Wickremesinghe and others only talk about my son who was in the second vehicle. No one talks about the United National Party (UNP) Colombo Municipal Councillor who was also there. Wickremesinghe never talks about it. Instead he wanted to take my son into custody,” he alleged.
Wickremesinghe responded saying, “Actually, there were two vehicles on the scene. The first vehicle knocked down Sarathchandra and the second vehicle fled without helping the victim or reporting the incident. Both these actions count as crimes. As Aluthgamage said, a UNP Colombo Municipal Councillor had also been there. When did I try to defend him? I did no such thing, and I will never do something like that.”
Wickremesinghe also said that he does not judge anybody. “Aluthgamage had to be there at the Police because it was his son. As a father he should do it. I can understand his situation very well. However, the law will apply irrespective of the status of those involved,” he pointed out.
Sarathchandra who met with the accident on 24 February at about 4:30 a.m. died on 9 March while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital. He had been knocked down by a defender when he was travelling on his motorbike. The eight suspects including Aluthgamage’s son, a UNP Colombo Municipal Councilor and a son of a Superintendent of Police had initially fled the scene and were later arrested.
